Market Overview
The week of October 19 through October 23 printed a classic reversal shape: three days of grinding higher into resistance, then a sharp two-day flush that gave back all of those gains and then some. The S&P 500 futures (MES) opened at 7766.25 and closed at 7672.25, a loss of 94 points on the week, or about 1.2%. The week's range stretched from 7648.5 to 7811.75, a spread of 163.25 points, which reflects a market that had both genuine conviction on the way up and real panic on the way down.
The first half of the week was driven by a tech-led rebound and growing anticipation around Magnificent 7 earnings. SpaceX results Wednesday reignited AI optimism and helped push the index to its weekly high at 7811.75. That ceiling didn't last. Meta and Tesla both reported after Wednesday's close. Meta beat on revenue but flagged heavy capital expenditure commitments, which reopened the core question the market has been wrestling with all year: is AI spending translating into returns, or is it a cost spiral? Meta shares dropped close to 7% Thursday. Tesla also slid despite beating estimates. Lam Research missed guidance and dragged semiconductors further. Oil prices surged amid renewed Middle East tensions, adding pressure across the board. Thursday's reversal was abrupt, and Friday extended the damage, closing near the week's low.
The 10-year yield pulled back to 4.99% by week's end, and the VIX moved from 18.37 to 19.45, reflecting a market that repriced risk quickly once earnings gave it a reason to.
